Should I pick a domain name to attract the search engines, or human visitors ?

These days it is really becoming harder to find meaningful domain names that is very sensible to the kind of business that you are doing and makes perfect sense to the search engines as well. If you are planning to spend well on your advertising cost and build a strong brand, go for a domain name that is very attractive to normal people. Names such as Google, Walmart may not mean much to the kind of business that they are into but they were able to build a strong brand and have a very huge fan following.

Whenever you choose a domain name see to it that you prefer .com domain names than .org, .net and other domain extensions. If you pick up a generic name such as health.com it may attract search engine spiders, but it would be really very hard to trademark it. You can also have two or three keyword rich domain names and redirect them to your actual website. It would also be a good idea to have sub domains of your choice as search engines consider sub-domains as a separate site from the base domain.

If you are only particular about building a website for search engines you can also use keyword rich domain names separated with hyphens, but however it really becomes hard for the visitors to remember your website. Whenever you purchase a domain name see to it that you purchase it from any reputed company which provides 24/7 support and is easily transferable from one hosting provider to another provider. I prefer hosting providers like Hostgator or Godaddy. If you prefer free domain names you can opt for domain names ending with co.cc.
